MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Second baseman Seth Ivey drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning at Paterson Field Thursday night, and G.W. Long’s pitching and defense did the rest as the Rebels beat Westbrook Christian 3-2 in first game of the AHSAA Class 2A best-of-three State Baseball Champion Series.
The two teams play game 2 at Riverwalk Stadium Friday morning at 10 a.m., with game three following 30 minutes later if needed.
Pitcher Garrett Davis (12-2) added two hits himself at the plate. However, it was his masterful pitching performance that sealed the win. He allowed four hits, walked none and struck out four to get the mound victory. Davis faced just 25 batters – four over the limit for Coach Drew Miller’s Rebels (31-8).
Mikhail Cazenave (10-3) turned in an outstanding performance for Westbrook (25-14), coached by Matt Kennady. He also gave up just four hits and struck out eight. Jonathan Ford had the game’s only extra-base hit when he tripled in a run in the top of the seventh off Davis. Ford then scored on Matthew Reaves’ ground out and Davis then closed out the game by striking out Cazenave.
G.W. Long holds the AHSAA state record for state championships with 13 with the first in 1980 and the last one coming in 2005.
