BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- A former NFL and University of Alabama
linebacker has been charged with food stamp fraud and claiming the
wrong woman as his wife on immigration forms.
Federal prosecutors accuse Saleem Abdul Rasheed of improperly
claiming $5,551 in food stamps while he was working as a teacher
for the Jefferson County Board of Education.
The lawsuit also alleges the 30-year-old Rasheed signed a
Department of Homeland Security document for a woman he claimed was his wife while he was legally married to another woman.
Rasheed's attorney Michael Rasmussen says his client is
cooperating with the government and expects a settlement.
The maximum sentence for food stamp fraud is 20 years in prison
and a $250,000 fine, while falsifying the document carries up to 10
years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
