ATHENS, Tennessee -- Troubled linebacker Rolando McClain, who announced his surprise retirement from the NFL last month, is back in school at Alabama, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Tuesday during a speaking engagement

"I know a lot of people get disappointed in Rolando McClain and a lot of the things he's struggled with," Saban said, "but he's with us now."

McClain, an All-American at Alabama who won the 2009 Butkus Award, was the eighth overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft and signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders that paid him $23 million in guaranteed money. He just never picked up where he left off at Alabama, as he struggled on the field and dealt with numerous legal issues away from it.

Waived by the Raiders after his third season in the league, McClain signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens in April. He was arrested 10 days later in Decatur and ultimately announced his retirement from the NFL as the Ravens began their offseason training activities.
