Dothan's Kasey Cooper has taken the auburn softball program by storm. Just a freshman, Cooper leads the Tigers with a .420 batting average.
"She's hitting three for a reason and you get to see how she puts it all together, she's intense. She's extremely intelligent. " says Auburn Head Coach Clint Meyers.
Cooper earned SEC Freshman of the Week after contributing to instrumental wins over LSU last weekend.
"I'm just humbled to get that award and to get that accomplishment. But ultimately it just shows how much hard work and how much dedication the coaching staff has prepared me for and just my team mates pushing me everyday" Cooper says.
But just because it seems like Cooper has it all together on and off of the field, she says she's not immune to routine freshman nerves and jitters. Even she gets intimidated by her experiences from time to time.
"Of course, I mean like look at the coaches. It's just like look at all of the knowledge they're trying to put in us. You know we're all a bunch of freshman in this team but just seeing their experience and learning what they've gone through really helps me a lot"
Like most freshmen, athlete or not, there are growing pains. But a simple glance at the stands tells Cooper she's never too far from home. Her family has yet to miss a game.
"They've been here all of the games. Even when we travel so it's a great experience and you know some of my team mates, former team mates and coaches get to come up and watch. It's just a great experience having that home town feel," Cooper explains.
Coach Clint Meyers is continually impressed with Cooper's maturity and skill on the field.
"Well if there's more Kasey Coopers out there, we'd love to have em come to Auburn," Meyers says.
