The Dothan High Softball Team kicked off the 2013 season in fashion on Monday, topping Smiths Station 12-5. The Tigers scored four times in the first inning, and four more in the fourth to take control against the visiting Panthers.
Dothan is facing high expectations as the season begins. The Tigers have advanced to three straight state tournaments, finishing second, first and third over the past three years.
And, the Tigers are considered one of the favorites to contend for the Class 6A State Championship once again this season, thanks to the return of several key players. Dothan features a strong senior class, led by three college-bound players.
Kasey Cooper finished runner-up for Miss Softball as a junior, and she enters her senior season as one of the favorites to contend for that award. Cooper has signed to play at Auburn next season.
The Tigers also feature FAMU-bound Denise Anderson at catcher and Wallace Community College signee Suzie McDonald on the infield.
Dothan returns to action on Thursday, hosting Prattville at 4 p.m. at Colby and Bottoms Softball Complex.
