MONTGOMERY, AL -- Haleyville entered this year's State Softball Tournament with a giant target on it's back, after winning last year's 4A State Title. When you have Holly Ward, being the hunted team doesn't matter.
The Lions ace pitcher threw a complete game, allowing just one run and striking out 10, leading Haleyville to an 8-1 win over Charles Henderson. The Trojans scored their only run in the final inning, after the Lions had built an 8-0 lead.
Haleyville scored a run in the first inning on a wild pitch, then slowly extended that advantage throughout the rest of the game. The Lions scored two runs in the third and fourth innings, including a two-run homer from Tori Pendley in the fourth.
The Lions added three more runs in the 6th inning to put the game out of reach. Haleyville will face Cherokee County in a winner's bracket game at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Trojans will play Oak Grove at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
