Chipola Women Advance, Men fall in National Basketball Tournament

KANSAS—The Chipola Lady Indians on Thursday moved one step closer to the school’s first national championship in basketball with a 64-54 win over Butler in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, Kansas.

Evelyn Akhator led Chipola with 16 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks. Rhani Bell scored 11.

The Lady Indians face Hutchinson College in the semi-finals, Friday, March 21, at 8 p.m. A win Friday would move Chipola on to the finals to play the winner of #1 Trinity Valley and #5 Central Arizona Saturday at 7 p.m. A loss Friday would put Chipola in a third place game set for 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Lady Indians trounced ASA of New York, 81-46, in their first round game. Tiffany Lewis led with 19. Brianna Wright and Akhator both scored 16.

The Chipola men’s season came to an end March 20 with an 86-79 loss to Jones County in the quarter-finals.

Sam Cassell, Jr., led Chipola with 19 points. Jamaar McKay had 18. Fouls and free throws proved to be the difference with Jones County connecting on 29 of 37 while Chipola made 16 of 23.

The Indians scored a 91-83 win over State Fair (MO) in the first round. Cassell led Chipola with 23 points. Carlos Morris had 18.

The women’s semi-finals and possible finals will be broadcast on WJAQ-100.9—FM, on the web at www.ihigh.com and live on Chipola College Television (CCTV), Comcast Channel 4.
