MARIANNA—The Chipola Lady Indians defeated Santa Fe, 8-5, to win the Florida FCSAA/Region VIII State Softball Tournament on May 5.
Karissa Childs was the winning pitcher for Chipola. Jasmine Tanksley was three for four. Mya Anderson had four RBI’s, two hits and one run.
Chipola made it to the championship game by winning the Gulf District bracket beginning with a 10-2 win over State College of Florida on May 3. Eva Voortman was the winning pitcher for the Lady Indians. Stephanie Garrels was two for three and scored two runs. Chandler Seay went two for two with one run scored.
Chipola beat Pensacola 11-6 also on May 3. Voortman was the winning pitcher. Mya Anderson was two for three with three runs scored. Katie Harrison was two for two with three runs scored and three RBI’s. Chandler Seay was two for three with two runs.
Chipola beat Polk, 11-0, on May 4. Voortman was the winning pitcher. Katie Harrison was two for three with two runs and four RBI’s. Stephanie Garrels was three for four with two runs. Meghan Borak was two for three with two runs and two RBI’s. Chipola also beat Polk again on May 5, 7-1.
Chipola (42-8) will play in the NJCAA National Softball Tournament, May 15-18, in St. George, Utah.
The Lady Indians were ranked fourth in the final FCSAA State Poll on April 25. In the final league standings, Gulf Coast (12-4) finished first. Chipola (11-5) was second. Northwest (10-6) was third. Tallahassee was (4-12). Pensacola was (3-13).
Chipola head coach Belinda Hendrix has led the Lady Indians to three state titles and a national championship in 2007.
