MARIANNA—The Chipola Indians captured second place in the Panhandle Conference and earned a spot in the FCSAA State Tournament with a big 7-3 win over Gulf Coast on April 22.
Michael Mader was the winning pitcher.
The Indians won seven of their last eight outings including: a 7-6 win over Gulf Coast on April 24; a 7-4 win over Pensacola on April 21; a 4-0 shutout over Pensacola on April 18; a 6-5 win over Northwest on April 17; and a 6-1 win over Northwest on April 15.
The top two teams in the conference move on to the state tournament, May 10-14, in Lakeland. Chipola will represent the Panhandle along with Conference Champion Tallahassee.
Chipola (35-19) will face Miami Dade (35-8) in the first round of the FCSAA State Tournament, Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. (EST). A win would put the Indians in a second round game, Saturday at 7 p.m., with the winner of State College of Florida and Seminole. A loss in the double-elimination tournament would move Chipola to the 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
The regular season league standings are: Tallahassee (16-4), Chipola (12-8), Gulf Coast (9-11), Pensacola (7-13) and Northwest (6-14).
Chipola is ranked seventh in the FCSAA State Coaches Poll. Tallahassee is first. Gulf Coast is eighth.
