OCALA—The Chipola College Indians defeated St. Petersburg 79-73 to capture the Region 8/FCSAA State Championship, March 8, on the campus of the College of Central Florida in Ocala.
Sam Cassell, Jr., led Chipola with 22 points. The Indians shot 30 of 34 from the free throw line. Chipola led 33-29 at the half.
Chipola has won the men’s 13 titles, more than any other college.
Chipola defeated Polk 76-66 in the semi-finals on March 7.
The Indians beat defending State Champion Central Florida 82-73 a first round game March 5. Chipola (25-5) tops the men’s state poll.
The Chipola College Lady Indians are set to play rival Northwest Florida State in the state title game Saturday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Indians (30-1) made it to the state championship with a 69-62 win over Florida State College at Jacksonville in the semi-finals on Friday. Chipola swamped Palm Beach Thursday, March 6, in the first round of the state tournament.
