ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- Peyton Manning's first appearance in blue and orange at Sports Authority Field on Saturday was expected to draw the largest crowd ever to watch a Denver Broncos practice.

The parking lots filled up more than an hour before the scrimmage and gates opened 40 minutes early to ease crowd flow.

The Broncos were expecting to easily beat the record of 20,782 fans who watched the stadium scrimmage two years ago, when newcomer Kyle Orton was famously booed for his poor performance in then-coach Josh McDaniels' first season.

The field was deemed safe Saturday even though there was some damage between the 10- and 25-yard lines by the south end zone, where the stage stood for a recent country music concert by Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw.
