Auburn's past full of near-misses on title front

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - This Auburn team gets a chance to
settle its national championship claim on the field.

Plenty of the top-ranked Tigers' predecessors wish they could
say the same. That includes the unbeaten 2004 team, and also the
1993 Tigers, who went unbeaten but were on probation. Then there
was 1983 team that got leapfrogged by Miami in the final polls.

You can even go back to the '58 team whose only blemish was an
early tie with Georgia Tech. The Tigers claim only one national
title, and that was in 1957.

Auburn left tackle Lee Ziemba says he has heard from plenty of
players from that team six years ago. Their message, he says:
"Take advantage of the opportunity. This chance doesn't come
around for very many people very often."

Auburn fans know that well.
