Auburn took the first step toward remaking its football program on Sunday, announcing the firing of head coach Gene Chizik.
In taking the second step -- finding and landing his replacement -- the Tigers will run across some competition.
Auburn was one of five major-college football programs to fire their head coaches on Sunday. Also canned within the same 24-hour period: North Carolina State's Tom O'Brien, Colorado's Jon Embree, Purdue's Danny Hope and Boston College's Frank Spaziani.
AL.com Auburn beat writer Joel Erickson on Sunday listed potential candidates to replace Chizik on the Plains, a list that includes former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Petrino, Fisher and Malzahn are all former Auburn assistants.
