Artis-Payne takes winding road to Auburn backfield

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Cameron Artis-Payne's road to Auburn went through prep school and junior college with a two-year hiatus from football in between.

The 22-year-old tailback joined an Auburn backfield in dire need of help in January and is winding up his first spring practice.

Artis-Payne says going "from sitting on the couch" to the Southeastern Conference is a lot to digest.

Considered the nation's top junior college running back, he says grades kept him from getting scholarships for either football or basketball out of high school.

Artis-Payne spent two years home in Harrisburg, Pa., after prep school before getting his shot at Allan Hancock College in California.

Artis-Payne says he got scholarship offers from most schools in the Pac-12 but only one from the SEC, where he wanted to play.
