MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Isaiah Crowell and Greg Jenkins each rushed for a pair of first-half touchdowns as Alabama State defeated Mississippi Valley State 29-7 Saturday night at Cramton Bowl.
After going three-and-out to open the game, Alabama State (1-1 overall, 1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) scored on its next three possessions to take control of the game in the first quarter.
Jenkins ended a five-play, 52-yard drive with a 14-yard scoring run to give Alabama State a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
Crowell’s 15-yard touchdown run to the far right pylon ended an eight-play, 58-yard drive to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing play from scrimmage, ASU’s Edward Mosley forced a fumble that was recovered by Willie Roller and returned to the Valley 9-yard line. Jenkins’ scoring run on the next play extended Alabama State’s lead to 20-0 just 19 seconds later.
“It was good to be home in front of our fans and to get a victory,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “We want to have a chance at the end of this to win the SWAC, and it starts with this game. We’re 1-0 in the East, 1-0 in the SWAC and it’s something to build on.”
Crowell scored his second touchdown in the second quarter on a three-yard run to end a seven-play, 55-yard drive to give Alabama State a 26-0 lead it would take to halftime.
Mississippi Valley State (0-2, 0-1) scored a touchdown on its first possession of the third quarter one-yard run by Trey Bateaste, but would get no closer. Bobby Wenzig’s 37-yard field goal late in the third quarter ended the scoring for Alabama State.
“We started out and did a good job, but we have to learn how to finish people off,” Barlow said. “There was an opportunity to really finish (Mississippi Valley) off and we didn’t do that.”
Crowell ran 16 times for 60 yards, while Jenkins rushed for 72 yards on 13 carries for Alabama State, which gained 167 of its 297 yards on the ground.
Brandon Stansell rushed 16 times for 167 yards to lead the Delta Devils.
Alabama State travels to play Grambling State Saturday, while Mississippi Valley State plays at Southern Thursday night.
