Alabama QB Sims devotes spring break to QB work

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- AJ McCarron's former backup quarterback is finally getting his chance to compete for a starting job.
Senior Blake Sims is easily the most experienced of five candidates to replace McCarron who are participating in spring practice. Florida State transfer Jake Coker arrives this summer.
The athletic Sims' big focus has been trying to improve as a drop back passer. He spent spring break in Florida working with quarterbacks coach Ken Mastole on things like footwork and technique.
Sims says this is "a once in a lifetime opportunity."
Sims has seen limited action in 18 games as McCarron's backup over the past two seasons after playing running back in 2011.
Mastole believes "he can execute an offense at the collegiate level" and fit into Lane Kiffin's system at Alabama.
