PARIS (AP) - Serena Williams has advanced to the third round at the French Open by beating Julia Goerges (Gur'-guss) 6-1, 6-1.
With a backlog in the schedule because of rain, Williams waited until the sixth day of the tournament to play her second-round match Friday. She played almost mistake-free tennis, with only four unforced errors to 20 for Goerges.
Playing on a sunny, cool morning, Williams needed only 55 minutes to win and was done before lunch. She feasted on Goerges' weak second serves, taking them two steps inside the baseline, and held every service game.
Williams won nine consecutive games to take control. The 12-time Grand Slam champion is bidding for her first French Open title since 2002.
