Auburn's Swinton Trying to Join Pal in WR Rotation

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - James Swinton watched from the sidelines while his best friend soared up Auburn's depth chart to become a starting receiver last season.

Now, he's hoping to join Rod Smith in the playing rotation.

It would have been easy for Swinton to feel a little jealous
about Smith's ascension. After all, it once seemed like the
situation for the two friends would have been in reverse.

Swinton arrived at Auburn as a scholarship player but has just two catches in his first two seasons. Smith came in as a walk-on and was a starter by his sophomore year.

Swinton said he was just happy for his friend, who was a junior varsity teammate before heading to a different high school in Georgia.

Swinton has emerged as a candidate to make Auburn's six-receiver rotation, largely because of his speed. He said he has been clocked at "4.3 flat" in the 40-yard dash, and said there's no doubt who is the team's fastest player.
