TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Greg McElroy started learning from Major Applewhite long before either landed on Alabama's campus.
The freckle-faced, red-headed McElroy grew up watching the freckle-faced, red-headed Applewhite play quarterback for Texas.
Now, Applewhite is the Tide's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, working daily with his onetime starry-eyed fan.
McElroy, a redshirt freshman was signed by the previous coaching staff out of Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas. Nick Saban hired Applewhite earlier this year.
McElroy has since turned in a strong performance in the spring game. He also put up solid numbers in last Saturday's scrimmage, passing for 201 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
McElroy isn't challenging starter John Parker Wilson for the job. But he is likely making Alabama players and coaches feel a little better about Plan B.
