AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn is trying to put more defensive speed
and more players on the field.
Coach Gene Chizik says the Tigers are working safety Daren Bates
at linebacker during spring practice primarily because of the
movement to bring more speed to the defense.
Auburn also has more depth in the secondary with Aairon Savage
and Mike McNeil coming back after missing last season with
injuries. Even with all three starting linebackers back, the group
could use some help.
Craig Stevens and Josh Bynes played virtually every defensive
snap last season while junior college transfer Eltoro Freeman
started eight games.
Signee Jessel Curry enrolled in January and is going through
spring practice, which began Wednesday, and three other freshman
linebackers will arrive this summer.
