DULUTH, Ga. (AP) - Ashley Houts scored 18 points and delivered a
key late defensive play to help No. 22 Georgia beat Alabama 73-66
on Thursday night to survive a first-round scare in the
Southeastern Conference tournament.
With Georgia leading by two points, Houts stole the ball from
LaToya King, who fouled the senior with 1:29 remaining. Houts made
two free throws to stretch the lead to 67-63.
Alabama's Ericka Russell, who scored a career-high 30 points,
hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one.
Meredith Mitchell made four free throws in the final 28 seconds for
Georgia (23-7) will face Mississippi State on Friday night.
Alabama (12-18) lost in the first round of the tournament for
the fifth straight year.
Georgia took its 18th straight win over Alabama, a streak that
began in 1998.
