TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Georgia right hander Stephen Dodson won
his second straight Southeastern Conference road game as he led the
Bulldogs to a 4-1 win over the University of Alabama in the series opener Friday night.
Dodson took a shutout into the ninth inning and held a struggling Alabama offense to one run and eight hits in the win. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
He allowed three hits in the ninth inning as the Tide brought the tying run to the plate, before Dodson fanned Ryan Rhoden and Brandon May to end the game.
Georgia (13-and-21, 5-and-8 Southeastern Conference) put the game away with two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Matt Robbins and a sacrifice fly by Jake Crane as the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead.
Alabama (20-and-15, 5-and-8 SEC) avoided the shutout when sophomore right field Kent Matthes led off the ninth inning with his eighth home run of the season to make the final four-to-one.
Miers Quigley suffered his second straight loss for Alabama as he allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings.
The two teams will continue this three-game series Saturday at
3:05 pm central time.
