AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Pitchers Corey Bachman and Kevin Crum held Auburn without a hit for the final three-point-two innings to help VMI to a 7-to-3 victory over Auburn.
Number 30 V-M-I (13-and-3) scored three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to snap the Tigers' six-game winning streak with a come-from-behind win in the first game of a two-game set.
Auburn (17-and-3) scored a pair of unearned runs in the second on a throwing error by the V-M-I catcher and a R-B-I single by Ross Smith to take an early two-to-nothing lead and rode the success of starter Taylor Thompson for the next five innings. The Keydets' Eddie Van Es hit a two-run home run in the sixth to knot the game at 2-to-2.
Auburn recaptured the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an Andy Bennett sac-fly to center only to see V-M-I score three runs in the top of the eighth off of reliever Justin Bristow. The Keydets tacked on two more off of Luke Greinke in the ninth and Crum nailed down his 10th save of the year with two innings of shutout ball.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at three p-m central time.
