STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Aaron Weatherford pitched seven innings of three-hit baseball as Mississippi State beat Troy 2-to-1 Friday in the first round of the Cadence Bank Classic.
Weatherford (2-0) struck out seven, walked none and had a stretch where he retired 15 batters in a row for the Bulldogs (5-0).
Chad Crosswhite picked up his second save after allowing three hits and stranded a pair of runners in the ninth inning with a strikeout.
The Trojans (9-4) had six hits against two Mississippi State pitchers. Clegg Snipes (1-1) picked up the loss after allowing eight hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Mississippi State clinched the game with a two-run third inning.
An RBI double by Brett Henry gave Troy a one-to-oh lead in the second inning. Jeffrey Rea had a pair of doubles and was the lone multiple hitter for the Bulldogs.
