The Straughn Tigers had a playoff team a year ago. They got bounced out of the Class 3A playoffs in the first round, courtesy of Slocomb to finish the year at 8-3.
Head Coach Trent Taylor says he have to rely on his underclassmen in 2009.
"We've got a large junior class with about 21 juniors,” Taylor said. “They're kind of having to feel their way a little bit. Obviously, a lot of those guys we're depending on to be those leaders. Usually, you expect that out of your seniors and there have been some good ones in that class as well. But, because that (junior) class is so large, those are the guys we've got to depend on, on the field and for the leadership as well."
Straughn visits cross-town rival Andalusia in the season opener Friday.
