Ten New Inductees into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame

2009 Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is Saturday, July 11 at the Dothan Civic Center at 7 p.m.

Class of 2009:

Andalusia native Robert Horry helped the University of Alabama win three SEC tournament titles. Horry was selected 11th overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. He went on to win an incredible seven NBA titles in 16 seasons. Horry is one of just two players to ever win championships with three different teams. He won two with Houston, three with the Los Angeles Lakers and two with the San Antonio Spurs.

Long-time Slocomb coach Dwight Tew is also being inducted. Tew spent 12 seasons at Slocomb, leading the Red Tops to the state semifinals in 1978 and in 2002. Tew was the Class 2A State Coach of the Year in 2002.

This class also includes the winningest coach in state history. Glenn Daniel had 302 wins in 37 years at Luverne and Pine Hill.

Leavy Boutwell is also Hall of Fame bound. Boutwell put together an impressive 149-59 record as a head coach. He coached at New Brockton, Florala, Geneva and Northview. Boutwell led his teams to 23 playoff appearances and three undefeated regular seasons.

Other other inductees include Sim Bird. He is one of the best quarterbacks in Troy State history.

Arlin Davis is a veteran high school official.

Danny Grant is troy's all-time leading receiver.

Tina Johnson helped Daleville dominate in girl’s basketball in the early 1980's.

Elba native Ronald McKinnon played ten seasons in the NFL.

There's one journalist on this year's list of inductees. He's veteran high school sports reporter Ron Ingram. Ingram worked at both the Dothan Progress and Dothan Eagle before moving on to the Birmingham News.

The induction ceremony is set for July 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Dothan Civic Center. Tickets are $30 each. The proceeds will benefit the Wise Center.
