HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - South Carolina had to work late for an
opening-round win the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament.
The Gamecocks scored four times in the top of the 11th to secure
a 9-5 win over Alabama in a game that ended early Thursday morning.
South Carolina (38-19) extended its winning streak to eight
straight games and gave the bottom four seeds a sweep over the top
seeds on Wednesday.
Alabama (37-18) may have lost starting third baseman Jake Smith,
who was injured on the game's final play. His right leg was put in
a cast and he was taken to a hospital for further examination.
South Carolina is scheduled to play Vanderbilt Thursday at 8:30
p.m. Alabama plays LSU at 1:30 p.m.
