ATLANTA (AP) - Jordan Schafer, who was suspended for the first
50 games of the 2008 season for a violation of baseball's drug
policy, is the Atlanta Braves' new starting center fielder.

The 22-year-old Schafer won the job on Friday as the Braves made
roster cuts before their exhibition game against the Detroit
Tigers.

Schafer has never played above Double-A. He beat out Gregor
Blanco, who was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett with outfielder
Brandon Jones, right-handed pitcher Manny Acosta and left-hander
Boone Logan.

Right-hander Kris Medlen, infielder Brooks Conrad and catcher
J.C. Boscan were reassigned to the minor league camp.

Catcher David Ross will open the season on the disabled list
with a groin injury.
