NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee State University has named
John A. Cooper as the new head coach for men's basketball.
President Melvin N. Johnson said in a statement Friday that Cooper was very impressive in the interview process and understood where the school wanted to go with the basketball program.
Cooper replaces Cy Alexander, who was fired Feb. 6. Cooper comes from Auburn University where he served for five seasons as associate head men's coach with Jeff Lebo. This will be his first head coaching job, but he has more than 15 years of coaching experience at Oregon, South Carolina and Fayetteville State.
The Tigers went 12-19 this season and lost in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.
Cooper said in a statement he hopes to lead the team to more championships.
