BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him at the helm for at least another three years.

Slive, 68, will have presided over the powerhouse league for 10 years when the deal ends on July 31, 2012.

The SEC, which announced the extension on Thursday, has recently signed lucrative 15-year deals with CBS and ESPN to broadcast games in various sports.

Slive has implemented policies to assist league schools in rules compliance and enforcement, and SEC teams have won 21 men's and 23 women's national championships during his reign.

Slive has also served as coordinator of the Bowl Championship Series and is currently the chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee. He served on the Commission of Athletic Opportunity from 2002-03.
