BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Orlando Mendez-Valdez recorded the
first triple-double in program history in Western Kentucky's 99-76
victory over Troy on Thursday.
The junior guard had 18 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists,
wrapping up the feat with an assist on an Anthony Sally jumper with
6:53 left in the game.
The point total was the largest of the season for the
Hilltoppers (8-4, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference) who never trailed the
Trojans (5-9, 1-2) and extended their lead to as many as 23 points
in the second half.
A.J. Slaughter led the Hilltoppers with 20 points, Steffphon
Pettigrew added 19 and Jeremy Evans had 16. Richard Delk led Troy
with 17 points and Travis Lee had 15.
The Hilltoppers also outrebounded the Trojans 41-27.
The game was only the sixth ever played on New Year's Day for
the Hilltoppers, who improved their mark to 4-2 in those games.
