MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Del Howell pitched six shutout innings
and hit a grand slam to lead American Christian Academy to an
11-nothing victory over Shoals Christian today in the Class 1-A
state championship series. The win gives American Christian its
third consecutive state title and a sweep of the best-of-three
series. Howell (13-1) struck out 12 and allowed only three hits and
three walks.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Other prep baseball games on today's
schedule includes game two of the Class 4-A title matchup between
Saint James and Deshler. Saint James is up one-oh after winning
game one 4-to-2 yesterday. Ranburne plays Phil Campbell in a battle
of Class 2-A teams. The night game features Cullman against
Stanhope Elmore in the Class 5-A championship series.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The 2006 college football season is still
months away, but that hasn't stopped some publications from making
preseason predictions. Athlon Sports ranks Auburn ninth in the
country and picks the Tigers to win the Southeastern Conference
Western Division.

UNDATED, Ala. (AP) - The Division One Softball Tournament opens
with regional play today at sites across the country. Auburn
(34-20) is in Tucson, Arizona, for tonight's game versus Ohio State
(38-21). First pitch is 6 p-m (C-D-T). Tomorrow (Friday) evening at
6:30 p-m, Alabama (49-9) hosts Mississippi Valley State (23-28) at
the softball complex in Tuscaloosa.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham-Southern trustees are
considering a cost-cutting switch from Division One athletics to
nonscholarship Division Three. The proposal has faculty support but
students are opposed. About 200 students demonstrated against the
move yesterday while the faculty adopted a resolution in favor of

ATLANTA (AP) - The Atlanta Braves are going for a sweep of their
four-game series with the Florida Marlins at Turner Field, with
Jorge Sosa trying for his first victory after dropping his first
five decisions. Chipper Jones' three-run homer in the eleventh last
night lifted the Braves to a 6-to-4 victory. The Braves also
activated relief pitcher Lance Cormier from the 15-day disabled
list today. The former Alabama pitcher went on the D-L with a
strained left oblique muscle on May 3rd.
