Birmingham Mayor Wants to Bid on 2020 Olympics

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford wants the city to make a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Langford told members of the City Council Tuesday that he plans to create a committee to make the application.

He handed out booklets outlining a plan that included the possible economic impact of the summer games and potential sites for athletic events.

Langford said he would seek public and private funding to pay for the $500,000 application fee. Birmingham was the host city for Olympic soccer competition in 1996.
