Alabama to Delay Planned Stadium Expansion

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - University of Alabama President Robert Witt says a slowdown in the economy is the reason he's decided to delay a planned expansion of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

He said it would be too difficult to raise money for the work.

The stadium was last expanded to a capacity of 92,138 before the 2006 season.

The university last year hired a firm to study expanding the south end zone as part of an athletic facilities master plan.

Witt believes the slumping economy could affect donors' outstanding pledges to the last capital campaign, which raised about $120 million to fund the previous Bryant-Denny expansion and other work.
