Alabama Looking to Improve Depth During Spring Practice

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - On paper, things look good for Alabama's football team on the eve of spring practice: 15 returning starters and a top rated recruiting class for the 2008 season.

But the Crimson Tide will be looking to replace a large portion of its offensive and defensive firepower when things get underway Thursday.

Gone from last year's 7-6 squad are All-Southeastern Conference defensive end Wallace Gilberry, who led the Tide in sacks and tackles for loss in 2007; cornerback Simeon Castille, an all-conference selection in 2006 and 2007; and DJ Hall, Alabama's all-time leader in several receiving categories, including receptions and yardage.

Head coach Nick Saban isn't making premature assessments of his team. He said he's more interested in seeing where his depth chart stands at the end of the spring than talking about where it stands now.
