TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - University of Alabama athletic director Mal Moore has announced that women's basketball coach Stephany Smith will not return to coach the Crimson Tide next season.
A statement from the school says Moore informed Smith of his decision to replace her during a meeting Tuesday.
Moore said Smith arrived when the program was having difficulties and that he appreciates efforts by Smith and her staff. But he said it's time for new leadership.
In three years at the head of Alabama's women's basketball program, Smith had a record of 27-61 overall and just 4-41 against Southeastern Conference opponents. None of her three teams made it to the SEC Tournament. Prior to coming to Alabama, Smith was head coach at Middle Tennessee, where her record was 153-88.
The Tide's record this season is 8-22 overall and 1-14 against SEC opponents.
Moore said he will begin a search for a new head coach immediately.
