LONDON (AP) -- Ryan Lochte (LAHK'-tee) gave the United States its first gold of the London Olympics in the 400-meter individual medley. Fellow American Michael Phelps, the winner of eight gold medals four years ago, finished fourth.
Lochte turned his much-anticipated duel with Phelps into a blowout, pulling away to win by more than 3 seconds.
Phelps, who barely qualified for the final, was denied his 17th career medal. When the race was over, he could barely pull himself out of the pool.

LONDON (AP) -- China's Ye Shiwen set the first world record at the Olympic pool, winning the women's 400-meter individual medley with a dominant finishing kick. The runner-up was American teenager Elizabeth Beisel (BY'-suhl), who led more than halfway through the grueling race. The winning time 4 minutes, 28.43 seconds, while Beisel finished in 4:31.27.

LONDON (AP) -- Australia has won gold in the women's 400-meter freestyle relay with the U.S. finishing third. In winning, the Australian set an Olympic record of 3 minutes, 33.15 seconds. The United States team got off to a blistering start with Missy Franklin swimming leadoff under world-record pace, but the Australians rallied behind Brittany Elmslie on the third leg. The U.S. finished in 3:34.24, giving Natalie Coughlin (KAWG'-lin) the 12th medal of her career, tying Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson as the most decorated U.S. female Olympian.

ARCHERY
U.S. takes silver
LONDON (AP) -- Italy won the gold medal in men's team archery at the Olympics, beating the U.S. by one point on the final shot. The Americans' silver was the country's first medal of the games. South Korea took bronze.
Michele Frangilli, Marco Galiazzo and Mauro Nespoli hugged and raised their hands in celebration after the final arrow beat the Americans 219-218 at Lord's Cricket Ground. The gold was Italy's first ever in the event.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
U.S. wins opener
LONDON (AP) -- The U.S. women's basketball team looked nothing like the squad that is expected to dominate the Olympics. It had to overcome a sloppy performance to beat Croatia 81-56.
The U.S., which got back to its hotel at 3 a.m. after the opening ceremonies, struggled for the first three quarters before winning its 34th consecutive Olympic contest.
The victory was far different than the 54-point pounding the Americans gave Croatia a week earlier.

US Women win
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- The U.S. women's soccer team made it two wins in two games in a 3-0 win over Colombia in Glasgow, Scotland. Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach (WAHM'-bahk) and Carli Lloyd scored.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
U.S. gets a win
LONDON (AP) -- Destinee Hooker had 21 points and the United States held off late-charging South Korea 3-1 in their opening match at the London Olympics. At one point the fans at Earls Court chanted "Des-tin-ee! Des-tin-ee!" as she dominated the 25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-21 victory. The United States won the silver medal in Beijing and is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.

GYMNASTICS
U.S. men look good
LONDON (AP) -- America's male gymnasts just might be able to back up their big talk. While perennial gymnastics powerhouses China and Japan bobbled and wobbled their way through qualifying, the American men proved they really do have the goods to contend for the gold medal. They didn't count a single fall, and their final score of 275.342 is almost three points ahead of surprising Britain.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Serena Williams advanced to the second round of the Olympic tournament with a victory on the same Wimbledon court where she won her 14th Grand Slam title a few weeks ago. U.S. first lady Michelle Obama was on hand to watch Williams dismantle former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic (yeh-LAY'-nuh YANK'-oh-vihch) of Serbia 6-3, 6-1 on Centre Court.

American John Isner (IHZ'-nur) won his Olympic debut.
LONDON (AP) -- When temperatures dropped into the 60s for start of the first night session at Horse Guards Parade, the Olympic beach volleyball players said bye-bye to their bikinis.
Two-time defending gold medalists Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor (TRAY'-nur) of the United States wore long-sleeved shirts on top of bikini bottoms for their 21-18, 21-19 victory over Natalie Cook and Tasmin Hinchley, a match that started at 11 p.m. Saturday (London time) when the temperature was 63 degrees. The Australians wore long pants, with T-shirts under their bikini tops.

MLB-FINAL SCORES
UNDATED (AP) -- The Cincinnati Reds rode the long ball to their ninth straight victory, 9-7 over Colorado.
Ryan Ludwick hit two home runs, and Scott Rolen, Drew Stubbs and rookie Todd Frazier also went deep for the NL Central leading Reds. The Reds are 13-2 since the All-Star break and hit a high-water mark for the season at 20 games above .500 at 60-40.
The winning streak is the longest for the Reds since a 10-game run in 1999.
Johnny Cueto (KWAY'-toh) withstood a rough start to pitch effectively for six inning to raise his mark to 13-5.

--Corey Brown's first major league hit was a home run and Ryan Zimmerman and Tyler Moore also went deep in the Washington Nationals' 4-1 win over Milwaukee. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-hander Francisco Liriano from Minnesota for shortstop Eduardo Escobar and pitching prospect Pedro Hernandez. The 28-year-old Liriano was an All-Star in 2006 but is 3-10 this season.

Magic have new bench boss
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Jacque Vaughn has been hired as the Orlando Magic's next head coach.
The 37-year-old Vaughn becomes the 10th coach in team history and replaces Stan Van Gundy, who was fired May 21. Vaughn played 12 seasons in the NBA, including 80 games for the Magic in 2002-03. The former Kansas Jayhawks standout has never been a head coach, but comes to Orlando after spending the past two seasons as an assistant in San Antonio.

CHAMPIONS TOUR-SENIOR BRITISH OPEN
TURNBERRY, Scotland (AP) -- The third round of the Senior British Open has Bernhard Langer (LAHN'-gur) on top at 7-under. He's one shot in front of Fred Couples, who shot a 6-under-64 in round three.

Big day for Garrigus
ANCASTER, Ontario (AP) -- Robert Garrigus (GEHR'-ih-guhs) broke the 54-hole scoring record at the Canadian Open that was set more than a half-century ago by Arnold Palmer. On rain-softened greens, Garrigus used his power and some timely putts for a 6-under 64 that gave him a one-shot lead over William McGirt.
Garrigus was at 16-under 194, one shot better than Palmer in 1955.
LPGA-MASTERS
Co-leaders after 54 holes
EVIAN-LES-BAINES, France (AP) -- American Stacy Lewis and South Korea's Inbee Park share a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the LPGA tournament in France.
Park carded a 2-under-par 70 to get to minus-11 while Lewis could do no better than a 73.
Natalie Gulbis, Karrie Webb and 17-year-old amateur Hyo Joo Kim are 10 under with 18 holes to play.

NASCAR-BRICKYARD 400 QUALIFYING
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Denny Hamlin has won the pole position for Sunday's Brickyard 400, turning a lap of 182.763 mph in today's qualifying. It's the 11th pole of Hamlin's career and his second this season.

Sam Hornish Jr. was second, followed by Ty Dillon, Denny Hamlin and Austin Dillon.
