Auburn Opens Spring with Fast-Paced Offense, QB Battle

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The Auburn Tigers opened spring practice Sunday with a fast-paced two-hour workout.

The increased tempo was courtesy of new offensive coordinator Tony Franklin and his spread offense.

The four quarterbacks vying to replace Brandon Cox are in the spotlight, especially junior college transfer Chris Todd and sophomore-to-be Kodi Burns. Franklin had praise for the quarterbacks and also tailbacks Brad Lester and Mario Fannin.

The Tigers will work out in shorts again Tuesday and have their first scrimmage Saturday.

Tuberville said he was impressed with how the quarterbacks have picked up at least a slimmed-down version of Franklin's offense, which was put in before the bowl game. Freshman DeRon Furr and Todd enrolled in time for spring, joining Burns and Neil Caudle.

Defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads is also a newcomer to the Tigers, though the defense isn't expected to undergo nearly as dramatic an overhaul.
