SWAC Tournament-Gunshots

A gunfight in Birmingham between rival gangs on a street beyond the center-field wall halted the championship game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference college baseball tournament late last night.

Play was halted with Southern University and Prairie View tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the 15th inning at 10:40 p.m.

Players scrambled to their locker rooms and fans dashed for cover after hearing what appeared to be fireworks just beyond the center-field fence at Rickwood Field.

Southern's Brandon Mason had just hit a leadoff triple and there was a 1-0 count to Kevin Nelson when the incident occurred.

Sergeant Andrew Washington says police believe there was a gunfight between rival gangs. Washington told both teams and the conference that it was safe enough for play to resume, but Prairie View officials say they felt unsafe and the game was called off until this morning.

Southern and Prairie View will resume play at 8 a.m.
