AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Paul Rhoads has finally landed at Auburn Rhoads was officially named the Tigers' defensive coordinator today by coach Tommy Tuberville after eight seasons in the same post at Pitt.
Rhoads had turned down Tuberville's first job offer in 2002, opting to remain at Pitt. The Tigers have had three coordinators since then, including Will Muschamp, who left after the season to run the defense at Texas.
Rhoads, who is 40, joined Pitt in 2000 after spending five seasons at Iowa State, where he coached the inside linebackers for one season and the secondary for four seasons. Rhoads, a former player at Missouri Western, was an assistant at Pacific from 1992-94.
The Tigers will have new leaders on both sides of the ball. Tuberville hired Tony Franklin as offensive coordinator in December.
Like Franklin, Rhoads inherits a defense with promising talent returning. The Tigers return defensive end Antonio Coleman and linebacker Tray Blackmon. They do lose defensive end Quentin Groves and tackle Pat Sims, who is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft.
