Redskins Safety Sean Taylor Dies a Day After Being Shot

MIAMI (AP) - Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died -- a day after he was shot at home by what Miami-Dade police say was an intruder.

Family friend Richard Sharpstein says Taylor's father told him the news around 5:30 a.m. Sharpstein calls Taylor's death a "tremendously sad and unnecessary event." He says the 24-year-old NFL star was a "wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him."

Taylor died early this morning at the hospital where he had been airlifted after the shooting.

His father and a family member are at Taylor's house in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay but both declined to make additional comments.

Doctors had been encouraged last night when Taylor squeezed a nurse's hand. But Sharpstein says he was told Taylor never regained consciousness after being transported to the hospital.
