SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Barry Bonds has experienced jubilation during his 22 seasons in a major league uniform. But, incarceration could be in his future.
Baseball's home run king has been indicted on perjury and obstruction of justice charges for telling a grand jury he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.
He could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice.
The indictment concludes a four-year federal investigation into steroid use by elite athletics, and comes three months after Bonds passed Hank Aaron on the all-time home run list.
It says evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes.
The indictment charges Bonds with lying when he said he didn't knowingly take steroids given to him by his personal trainer, Greg Anderson. He is also charged with lying that Anderson never injected him with steroids.
A federal judge has also ordered Anderson be released from prison. Anderson was incarcerated most of the past year for refusing to testify against Bonds.
