Ohio State still on top; Alabama No. 22, Auburn 23

NEW YORK (AP) - Ohio State has strengthened its grip on number one in The Associated Press Top 25.

The Buckeyes picked up 57 first-place votes following a 24-17 victory over Michigan State that boosted them to 8-and-0 on the year.

That's seven more number-one mentions than last week when Ohio State took over the top spot from LSU. The Tigers leapfrog from fifth to third this week, with five first-place votes.

Idle Boston College received two first-place votes in moving up a notch to second.

Oklahoma is fourth, followed by Oregon, West Virginia and Arizona State, which picked up one first-place mention. Virginia Tech is eighth with Florida and Southern California tied for ninth.

Then it's South Florida, which tumbled from second to 11th after suffering its first loss, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky and South Carolina.

Hawaii checks in at 16, followed by Texas, California, Michigan and Georgia.

The last five is made up of Virginia, No. 22 Alabama, No. 23 Auburn, Penn State and Rutgers.
