GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida coach Urban Meyer believes theonly way to stop agents and players from breaking NCAA rules is topunish them.
Meyer is one of several college coaches calling for harsher
penalties for anyone involved in unscrupulous behavior that
violates NCAA rules. Meyer says if there's no threat of discipline,
then agents and players can just "have at it."
Alabama's Nick Saban helped organize a conference call with
coaches, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the NFL Players
Association, athletic directors and agents. Meyer, Ohio State's Jim
Tressel, Texas' Mack Brown and Oklahoma's Bob Stoops also were onthe call.
The issue has plagued college football in recent months. The
NCAA has investigated alleged improper agent contact at Alabama,
Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
