Spanish Fort Repeats as Class 5A State Championship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Spanish Fort High School exploded for 28 second-half points to beat Muscle Shoals High School 35-14 in the AHSAA Class 5A state championship in Bryant-Denny Stadium to claim the Toros' third title.

Tied 7-7 at halftime, Spanish Fort got touchdown runs from Braxton Shabel and Tyler Johnston in the third quarter. Then in the fourth, LaDarrell Pettway returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown and Maurice Cole recovered a fumble in the end zone to put the game out of reach.

The Toros opened the scoring in the first quarter on a two-yard run from Mike Howard. The Trojans answered with a two-yard touchdown run by Zach Sullivan. Muscle Shoals added a late touchdown throw from Landon Smothers to Luke Smothers to cap its scoring.

Spanish Fort outgained Muscle Shoals 384 yards to 213. Toros quarterback Tyler Johnston completed 10 of 15 passes for 219 yards.
