The Fort Walton Beach Vikings were a veteran group in 2011. The Vikings featured 23 seniors, but managed only a 5-5 record, missing the playoffs.

One year later, the Vikings are hoping for bigger and better things, while breaking in new players at several positions. So, the team is counting on veterans like Georgia Tech commit John Marvin to lead the way until younger players learn the ropes and begin filling the shoes left behind by last year's large senior class.

"Our goal is to get back to the playoffs," Vikings Head Coach Mike Owens said. "To do that, you've got to win district games, and we didn't win any last year, for the first time ever, I think, that I can remember.

"We've got our work cut out for us, and that's been our goal all along. We've had a good off-season, a good winter and a good spring. We're ready to move forward now with the challenge."

Fort Walton Beach opens the regular season at home on Friday night, hosting Freeport.
