The Elba Football Team will face it's biggest test of the season so far on Friday night. The Tigers will travel to Flomaton for a Class 2A Quarterfinal Playoff showdown against the Hurricanes.
Elba makes the trip to Escambia County as the number one team in Class 2A. But, the Canes are ranked 6th, losing just once this season, by one point to Leroy.
So, the Tigers know they'll have to be at their best to clip the Canes, who feature a big, powerful offense, which ranks among the best in the state.
"It's their speed," Elba Head Coach Scott Rials said. "They've got the quarterback and a running back that are really, really fast. They do a lot of things. They'll run a lot of counters and misdirection. They do a little play-action pass. They're really good there.
"They're averaging 44-45 points a game, so they've been good offensively."
Despite the serious task at hand, the Tigers are confident as they prepare to make the two hour trip west. This is Elba's second straight trip to the Class 2A quarterfinals, and the Tigers believe that previous playoff experience will give their team an edge on the road this Friday.
"Our guys have really understood what this means," Rials said. "We went through that same scenario last year. We've been there. Our team understands it, and our players have really had good practices.
"I think everybody's raring to go."
Flomaton will host Elba at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. The winner will advance to face the American Christian-Leroy winner in the 2A semifinals next Friday night.
