Most of the players on this year's Elba Football Team weren't alive the last time the Tigers won a state championship. That was 1992, when Elba brought home the Class 3A title to Coffee County.
This Friday, the Tigers will look to end that 19-year drought, facing Tanner in Tuscaloosa for the 2A title. Elba players have been dreaming about this chance since the moment they lost in the quarterfinals last year.
And, they can't wait to hit the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Friday to play for the state's top prize.
"It's great," said senior linebacker Tyler Anderson. "We've been down this road for a long time. I started playing my 8th grade year. We've been trying to get here for a long time, and we finally got here. It feels good."
Players have enjoyed the pageantry that comes with a game of this magnitude.
"The hype is good hype," senior running back Michael Lindsey said. "The town is happy for us. It's like Friday night lights. You just get on the bus, and then you're just going through the town. The police have their lights on and you're excited. It's a great feeling."
Elba will face Tanner for the 2A Championship on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The game is also being carried locally on MyNet. Local listings for MyNet are posted below.
