Halloween is all about fun, right?
But there's something else you need to remember.
Safety starts with being smart about the costume.
First off, make sure it's the right size so little ones don't trip and fall.

"You wanna make sure it's not too big so it doesn't drag the floor. If it's a cape or some type of veil, like if you wanted to go as a bride or something like that you wouldn't want to trip over that as well. Basically you just want to make sure that the costume is just the right length for your child."

Try not to use masks, which can obstruct a child's vision.
Use kid-friendly makeup instead.

"It's all gonna be non-toxic and it washes off easily with soap and water and it's a great alternative to masks."

"But if they do choose a mask, make sure it provides adequate ventilation and the eyeholes are large enough to allow full range of vision."

Any accessories, such as swords, wands or wings should be soft, flexible and not too big for the child.

"No big wings!"

"Different costumes will actually come with different props and the props that those come with are usually foam or plastic. So it really ensures safety."

When purchasing costumes, wigs, or masks remember to look for flame resistant fabrics such as polyester or nylon and check for warning labels.

Finally, you should decorate or trim costumes and bags with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights or use an alternative.

"One prop that comes highly recommended for most costume stores, a flashing light to keep your kid safe and visible on Halloween night."

And for those expecting trick-or-treaters on Halloween, keep candles and jack-o-lanterns away from doorways or anyplace costumes could catch the flame.
