How Can You Protect Your Home?

We've shown you how a burglar gets in. We've shown how quickly it can happen. Now, the question is, how can you prevent it from happening in your home?
Locking your doors and windows is a great place to start, but we spoke with a reformed burglar who said it wasn't enough to keep a bad guy out.

"Anybody can kick the door off the hinges or anybody can bust a window."

Local security experts agree, and they say an alarm is the best way to stay safe. They say, however, that customers usually wait until they’ve already been robbed before they get an alarm.

"In most cases people react, they don't proact," Matt West with DSI Securities said.

"When do they feel like they need a security system? Generally right after they've been broken into," Bobby Richardson said. He also works with DSI. "If you're in a situation where somebody breaks into your house...when that alarm goes off, they're going to leave."

In fact, just seeing a security sign can prevent a burglary. For those who don’t want or can’t afford an alarm, you can still take steps, like beefing up your physical security. You can do that by getting things like stronger deadbolts, thicker glass for windows, or even a dog.

"Somebody is definitely going to think twice about going into your home if you have a large breed dog that appears that he does not want you in his home," Richardson said.

Richardson also gave us three major tips to keep your home safe.

"You need a dog that will bark, a security system that works and some type of a firearm because the worst type of criminal that we see is somebody that knows you're home and comes in anyway," he said.

If you don’t believe in having a gun in the house, Richardson says having mace or some other non-lethal weapon can work just as well in stopping a burglar.

Whether or not you come face-to-face with a burglar, it’s still smart to evaluate your home security.

"Look at your house like you would if you were on the other side. What would stop you if you were a criminal from coming into this home?" Richardson said.

If you don’t have a good answer to that question, now’s the time to act because you don’t want a criminal to act first.
